Abstract:

Rio2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games is a megaproject, which demands strong project management practices, but not only traditional ones could be applied in this sort of project, especially in IT department. Agile Project management is well known in IT environment; but its usage has been increasing significantly in other areas too. Agile project management is not restricted to Information Technology environment; it is possible to apply in many types of industries and sectors. Agile is good and recommended for time constraint, changeable environment, and complex projects, which matches completely with Olympics project scenario. Rio2016 Information Technology department faced a challenge situation regarding time to implement IT services on venues. Thinking to simplify the management effort and to have a strong project control Technology leaders decided to put in place some SCRUM practices in order to improve the management on Venue Technology Services (VTS) area. VTS introduced in technology services implementation projects, scrum board, stand up meetings and burndown charts on its project management toolbox. Scrum board shows what is happening in the project, standup meetings worked as a single team progress communication channel, and burndown chart showed easily the project status. These three items helped VTS venue team and improved the technology communication with other functional areas. Agile practices were well succeed and proved to be really good for this kind of megaproject.
