{"id":1205,"date":"2016-12-20T20:25:35","date_gmt":"2016-12-21T01:25:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pmsymposium.umd.edu\/pm2017\/?p=1205"},"modified":"2016-12-20T20:29:28","modified_gmt":"2016-12-21T01:29:28","slug":"two-day-symposium-to-feature-speakers-from-the-whiting-turner-contracting-company-u-s-census-bureau-nasa-goddard-space-flight-center-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pmsymposium.umd.edu\/pm2017\/two-day-symposium-to-feature-speakers-from-the-whiting-turner-contracting-company-u-s-census-bureau-nasa-goddard-space-flight-center-and-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Two-Day Symposium to Feature Speakers from the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, U.S. Census Bureau, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COLLEGE PARK, Md. \u2013 \u2013 The University of Maryland Project Management Center for Excellence is proud to name five in-demand keynote speakers to headline its fourth annual\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pmsymposium.umd.edu\/pm2017\/\">Project Management Symposium<\/a>, taking place May 4-5 at the University of Maryland campus in College Park, MD.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pmsymposium.umd.edu\/pm2017\/speaker\/jeff-gravatte\/\"><strong>Jeff Gravatte<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of CADD Microsystems,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pmsymposium.umd.edu\/pm2017\/speaker\/lisa-blumerman\/\"><strong>Lisa Blumerman<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of the U.S. Census Bureau,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pmsymposium.umd.edu\/pm2017\/speaker\/patricia-carper\/\"><strong>Patricia Carper<\/strong><\/a> of the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pmsymposium.umd.edu\/pm2017\/speaker\/karl-wunderlich\/\"><strong>Dr. Karl Wunderlich<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of Noblis, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pmsymposium.umd.edu\/pm2017\/speaker\/stephen-a-shinn\/\"><strong>Stephen A. Shinn<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center will provide symposium participants with a big-picture view of how project managers play an integral role in government, industry, and academe.<\/p>\n<p>To kick things off on May 4<sup>th<\/sup>, Gravatte will pull from experience as the CEO and Owner of CADD Microsystems during his presentation, \u201cTechnology trends affecting project management in building design and construction.\u201d With CADD Microsystems, Gravette maintains a focus on\u00a0the business aspects of applying design technology. He works with Architects, Engineers, Contractors and Building Owners to provide strategic technology planning.<\/p>\n<p>During lunch, Blumerman will divulge how project management is crucial at the Census Bureau in her presentation, \u201cCounting Our Nation: How Project Management Paves the Way.\u201d As the Associate Director for the Decennial Census programs, she provides executive leadership for three major programs within the Census Bureau\u2013the 2020 Census,\u00a0the American Community Survey, and the Geographic Programs.<\/p>\n<p>Carper will wrap up Day 1 of the Symposium with a monumental presentation titled, \u201cMGM National Harbor Project.\u201d As Vice President and on-site Project Executive for the MGM project for the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, Carper will cover the many facets of the $1.3B development in Oxon Hill, MD slated to open in December 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Wunderlich will present, \u201cCreating a System of Automated and Connected Vehicles,\u201d and share his world-view on how decentralized control of the shared transportation system resource can be influenced to reduce risks and meet the demands of the emerging mobility consumer.<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the keynote presentation list, Shinn discusses the cultural challenges project managers face when leading complex technical missions and will share approaches to ensure success in a changing environment.\u00a0 He reveals common cultural barriers and will discuss his change initiatives at Goddard to overcome barriers and provide a process for lasting change in his presentation, \u201cChallenges in a Changing Environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Symposium attendees can customize their event experience by choosing from a dozen session tracks on topics including agile\/IT, construction management (including building information modeling (BIM)), disaster management, education, federal programs, integrated program performance management, risk and big data, and technology in project management.
