INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Bill Brantley, ROI-Certified
DATE: Wednesday, April 30, 2025
TIME: 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM (four hours of instruction)
LOCATION: Adele H. Stamp Student Union, Prince George’s Room  – See Building Map

Description: To have a successful career, project managers must continually demonstrate their projects’ value. This four-hour workshop covers Phillips’ ROI methodology, teaching how to measure and communicate project impact in financial terms. Participants will learn to link project performance to business outcomes, gaining tools to justify investments, improve decision-making, and drive success.
Learning Points: The Phillips ROI Methodology – Describe the five levels of evaluation in the Phillips ROI model, including the process of isolating project impact.

ROI Calculation Techniques – Learn to gather data, monetize project outcomes, and calculate ROI step-by-step.

Communicate Project Value to Stakeholders – Create clear reports and presentations to show project success and ROI to executives and decision-makers.

Outline: Introduction to ROI in Project Management: Explanation of the Phillips ROI methodology and its role in project management. Comparison with traditional ROI methods. Main elements of the Phillips ROI process.

Step-by-Step ROI Framework: Establishing project objectives and metrics. Data collection methods. Converting data to monetary values. Calculating ROI. Communicating ROI results. Example walkthrough of the methodology applied to a hypothetical project.

Aligning ROI with Organizational Strategy: Identifying strategic alignment opportunities. Justifying project investments using ROI data. Gaining stakeholder buy-in through clear ROI communication. Stakeholder Alignment Role-Play: Participants assume roles of project managers and key stakeholders with varying levels of skepticism about ROI results. Objective: Practice presenting ROI findings and addressing stakeholder concerns. Outcome: Enhanced skills in communication and gaining buy-in for project decisions.

ROI Calculation Simulation: Participants are given a sample project with data sets (e.g., costs, benefits, and qualitative outcomes). Objective: Apply the Phillips ROI calculation steps to determine the project 's ROI. Outcome: Hands-on experience with converting data into monetary values and calculating ROI.

Hands-On Practice: Applying the Phillips ROI Method: Teams analyze a detailed case study of a completed project and apply the Phillips ROI methodology to evaluate its impact. Objective: Identify the monetary and non-monetary benefits, calculate ROI, and present findings to the group. Outcome: Ability to critically evaluate project outcomes and present ROI results persuasively.
