Abstract:

The proposed session aims to illustrate the benefits and process of integrating project management into academic research settings based on the successful implementation of the Research Project Management Core at Duke University. The presentation highlights the need for formal project management structures to address challenges like managing complex projects, meeting funding deadlines, and balancing competing responsibilities. It also explains the role of a project management core in enhancing research efficiency, compliance, communication, and quality in support of academic research and scholarly activities.

Key takeaways for participants include:

  1. Understanding the need for project management in academia: The lack of formal project management training among researchers can lead to missed deadlines, over-budget projects, and compromised research quality. A project management core can mitigate these issues.
  2. Strategies for implementing a project management core: Suggestions include starting with pilot programs in select departments, gaining leadership buy-in, and aligning project management goals with institutional priorities. Engaging faculty and addressing resistance to change are crucial for successful implementation.
  3. Measuring success and impact: It’s essential to track key metrics such as time spent on project management support and faculty feedback. Continuous improvement through feedback loops and sharing success stories can help refine and expand the project management core.

The presentation concludes with actionable steps, encouraging participants to explore integrating project management practices into their own research settings. The session is designed to offer a practical framework for establishing scalable project management models in academic institutions, ultimately improving research outcomes and team satisfaction.
