Presentation: Modeling Optimization across Multidimensional Portfolios

Abstract: UMD research on Multidimensional Portfolio Management (https://pm.umd.edu/2024/01/29/umd-research-leads-to-multidimensional-view-of-portfolio-management/) is being implemented within the US Department of Defense. This presentation will discuss modeling efforts for optimization of funding across the multidimensions of an enterprise portfolio schema, at outline in the research along the Value Chain. The paper will discuss the unclassified example, using the Battle of Hoth in Star Wars moving Empire Strikes Back. We will discuss the challenges of optimization within an uncertainty framework that preserves options.

Participants will gain several takeaways:

  1. Learn evolving strategies for handling complex optimization challenges that consider customers’ changing needs that go beyond classic risk analysis.
  2. Learn the critical need to develop an ontology that allows for horizontal and vertical integration from project, to program, to portfolio, and then across the enterprise.
  3. Understand the change management challenge of integrating across functional data stovepipes.
