From Start-up to Standout: The Journey of an Enterprise-wide, Non-profit Program Management Office – Coenen and Nessen
Abstract:
Diabetes affects 38.5 million Americans, with another 97.6 million living with pre-diabetes, contributing to approximately $412.9 billion in annual health care costs. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is committed to preventing and curing diabetes and improving the lives of those impacted. As a leading nonprofit, the ADA must navigate an increasingly complex landscape while scaling programs, increasing operational efficiencies, and delivering sustainable results for the diabetes community.
To meet this challenge, ADA’s Program Management Office (PMO) has expanded from a 10-person team to almost 40, now managing more than $70 million of ADA’s $155 million annual budget. This growth reflects a strategic shift toward structured program management, process discipline, and leadership development which are all essential to delivering measurable impact.
In this session, members of ADA’s PMO office will share how they:
- Engage in mission-driven work using structured program management to ensure aligned resources, coordinated efforts, and measurable impact.
- Create clarity and consistency through standardized tools like logic models and robust project plans, enabling teams to reduce ambiguity, collaborate effectively and sustain momentum.
- Invest in leadership and team development to elevate performance, build trust, and empower cross-functional teams.
Key Takeways:
- Strategic coordination is essential for mission-driven work
- Standardized processes drives clarity, consistency, and collaboration
- Leadership development is the foundation for sustainable impact
