Abstract: Promote a learning and working environment that is environmentally and socially conscious. Integrate sustainability into our operations, day-to-day practices, and into our built environment. Resiliency is a vital design criteria as communities face more frequent and intense natural hazards and threats from Mother Nature. Low lying coastal communities face a greater threat with rising sea levels and additional risk from storm surge and increase population pressures. What are we to do when the next disaster hits and lessons learned on how to stand up a disaster recovery program.

Biography: With over 25 years of experience in design and construction, Robert Schmitz, Assoc. AIA, CMIT, LEED GA, GGP, is a leader in sustainability. Robert has been involved with disaster recovery projects for the past 6+ years and is currently a Project Executive for the NY Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery Small Business and Rental Programs. Previously supported the NJ RREM Single Family Home Program. Robert currently sits on the Board of Directors for the NY/NJ Green Build Center. Robert attended New York Institute of Technology, earning a B.S. in Architecture. Then attended the New Jersey Institute of Technology, earning a Master’s in Architecture and an additional two year Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Design. Robert has been an adjunct professor teaching sustainability courses at Mercer County College. Outside the workplace, Rob is a world traveler, recently returning from Singapore and Thailand. In the summer time, he enjoys outdoors activities such as power boating, fishing, sailing, camping and hiking.
