Transition from being the Sage on the Stage to being the Guide on the Side to empower your teams to be more productive
When an expert transitions to a management role, she or he must determine when to be the Sage on the Stage verses the Guide on the Side. This transition can be tricky to navigate. The Sage on the Stage is a metaphor for being a mentor or expert, while the Guide on the Side is a metaphor for being a coach or cheerleader.
As an expert, you are used to being the go-to person for the answers, you enjoy the spotlight, and being listened to and moving the project along. Sharing your knowledge and experience and doing most of the work. Yet continuing to be an expert may not allow your team to use their knowledge and strengths this can lead to demoralization and demotivating of your team members.
As the Guide, you are on the side-lines and understand your team, the rules, and the goal. In the role as guide, you are not expected to know how to do everything. You trust the experts on your team to contribute and share. You encourage the team to be and become their best.
In this workshop, we will explore what it means to be the Sage on the Stage verse Guide on the Side and how choosing your role can impact your team’s performance and growth. We will discuss techniques you can use to guide, coach, and mentor your team. Attendees will leave the session with a better understanding of whether they are more the Sage or the Guide and how this role can impact the team, actionable steps they can use for each role.
