Paper and Presentation: The Changing Role of Project Management in Driving Organizational Excellence
Abstract: Executives in both the public and private sectors worldwide are beginning to recognize the full benefits that effective project management can bring to their organizations and are willing to make the necessary changes, especially changes in culture. As such, the landscape for project management is changing and new pillars of project management have emerged. These pillars are expected to drive project management into the next decade and to significantly improve the performance excellence of the organizations that take the time to understand and implement them.
The presentation builds on the vast contributions of global companies and organizations and shed the light on the strategic changes and project management capabilities improvements organizations and academia would be focused on. Major changes to project management will occur in this coming decade due to much of the new material and thought leadership that PMI and other professional organizations have been advocating in the Standards for Project Management and the accompanying continuous worldwide growth in the strategic role of project management.
Most of the critical future of work changes that are expected to happen through this decade can be clustered into themes that will encompass the proposed future pillars of project management. Themes emerge around project management as a strategic vehicle, changes in the role of project managers, the criticality of the project economy, and the correlation between transparency and autonomy in delivery cultures and business excellence. This presentation will enable professionals and students of project management to be better prepared for the jobs of the future as the project economy takes more of a center stage for most organizations.
