Abstract:

At last year’s symposium I covered 3 Ps of project planning – Prioritisation, Preparation & Perseverance and how they apply in the dramatic world of spacecraft launch and operation. The JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE (JWST) continues to amaze the world and along with Hubble (and other observatories) STScI is pushing the boundaries of our understanding of the universe but are the 3P’s of project planning enough?

Away from the glitz and glamour of cutting edge astronomical research there is a significant amount of work required to maintain the IT infrastructure in top condition. An often overlooked area of Information System Management is that of maintenance and upgrading of IT infrastructure components. In this presentation I shall illustrate tools and techniques we have created for just such projects – where they apply, how they adapt for scale and how we use them in an organisation that is sensitive to change.

From cyber-security projects to large-scale operating system upgrades ‘PERSEVERANCE’ is key – this session will explore how PMs can inject a fresh approach to planning that will increase the chances of a project’s success.
