Abstract: Transportation projects are impacted various risks which get compounded if the project is in an urban area. This paper studies this aspect through a case study approach. A global literature review was done to identify the risks associated with urban transportation projects and then a thorough study was conducted of the Mumbai Monorail project. The much-hyped Mumbai monorail project was the first monorail project in India, situated in the financial capital of the country-Mumbai. Mumbai Mono Rail was executed by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMDRA) to provide a safe and affordable transportation system and also to reduce the traffic congestion on the roads. Due to various risks impacting the project, it has faced time delays and cost overruns. After several delays, the project started operation on 1st February 2014, however, due to several issues there has been a sharp decline in ridership and the monorail has come to a complete standstill since November 2017. Due to various risks in the project, it has not achieved the objective of resolving the transportation issue of that area and reducing the traffic on already overburdened roads of Mumbai. In the present scenario of fast-paced urbanization, this study is relevant for future planning and implementation of urban transportation projects.
