Bridging Disciplines: Applying Engineering Project Management Principles to Global Diplomacy Initiatives – Eltally
Abstract:
What happens when an engineer-turned-diplomat uses Gantt charts and risk registers to manage public diplomacy projects? This session explores how core project management methodologies from the engineering sector can be effectively adapted to the realm of diplomacy, cross-cultural engagement, and public sector programming.
Drawing from my transition from managing complex engineering projects to U.S. Department of State international public diplomacy initiatives, I’ll share practical tools and case studies that illustrate how engineering-based PM frameworks, like Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), stakeholder mapping, and adaptive risk analysis, can foster clarity, collaboration, and results across borders.
Attendees will gain insights into translating technical PM tools into people-centered, unpredictable global environments; navigating cultural sensitivities and stakeholder alignment in multi-country projects; and enhancing impact in diplomacy programs through disciplined planning and execution.
This session is ideal for project managers seeking to expand their skillset to complex, human-centered initiatives in government, nonprofit, or international arenas. Whether you’re managing a water infrastructure project or a cross-cultural exchange program, you’ll walk away with adaptable strategies to lead with structure in uncertain terrain.
