Presentation: Reenvisioning Project Management: Back to the Basics
Abstract: Project management is facing an identity crisis. We have reached an inflection point. The familiar methods feel worn, and the path forward is unclear.
Traditional, predictive methods have been declining for years. Agile, once the hope, has fallen out of favor. Hybrid approaches are an option, but are loosely defined. Artificial intelligence is a looming disruptor. It has great potential to simplify, accelerate, and automate many project activities, but bots will never replace experience and leadership.
The sources of project success and failure are well-documented and well-known. Stakeholder engagement is critical. Scope creep is a killer. Ill-defined objectives lead projects down a deep, dark hole. As one industry leader states, “No project fails for an unknown reason.”
The data is compelling. Process maturity improves outcomes. A lack of process leads to chaos, and too much creates rigidity.
The path forward is not the next “shiny object”—methodology, framework, or tool. Harnessing what we already know and managing projects with intentionality will drive success.
In this presentation, Alan Zucker reminds us of the key elements to deliver successful projects. The key takeaways are:
- Projects are about people. Success depends on how we engage stakeholders, lead teams, and build relationships—not just on what we deliver.
- Intentionality matters. We reduce chaos and confusion by defining the process and establishing clear objectives and measures.
- Hybrid is a choice. There is a wealth of excellent practices. Be pragmatic and make context-sensitive decisions.
- Fundamentals outlive fads. Flawless execution of foundational practices matters. Emerging technologies and new ways of working will improve how we work.
To meet the future, we don’t need to reinvent project management. We need to recommit to the basics. The practices that work. That will drive success.
